Benign Moles & Skin Growths

Scientifically termed nevi, benign moles are prevalent skin growths composed of clusters of melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in the skin. Other benign skin lesions include seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, and cherry angiomas. If you're concerned about moles or skin growths, trust your skin to the experts at DERM Lab in North Vancouver.

What are Benign Moles & Skin Growths?

They often present as small, round, or oval-shaped spots with uniform colour and well-defined borders. While most benign moles are harmless and do not necessitate medical intervention, they may be subject to removal for cosmetic reasons or if they display suspicious characteristics that warrant evaluation for potential malignancy.

When considering the removal of benign moles and lesions, individuals may explore various treatment options tailored to their specific needs and preferences. These treatments aim to address cosmetic concerns, improve skin aesthetics, and, in some cases, alleviate discomfort or irritation caused by the presence of the growth.

Benign Mole & Skin Growth Treatments

Various treatments are available to address benign moles and skin growths, some common treatments range from excision and cryotherapy to laser treatment.

Treatment Options

Cryotherapy involves applying extreme cold through liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the targeted lesion. This method is suitable for small, superficial growths such as seborrheic keratoses and is often performed in a dermatologist’s office or clinic. Following cryotherapy, the treated area may form a blister before healing, and multiple sessions may be necessary for complete removal. This is not an option for true moles (nevi).

Surgical excision involves removing the mole or lesion under local anesthesia. There are a few techniques that can be used, depending on the lesion and its location. Surgical excision is required for benign moles or lesions with suspicious features requiring a histopathological examination for a definitive diagnosis.

CO2 surgical laser treatment utilizes a high-energy beam of light to precisely target and remove moles and lesions while minimizing scarring. This method offers several advantages, including enhanced precision, reduced bleeding, and minimized scarring. CO2 laser treatment is particularly favored for facial moles and lesions due to its ability to achieve precise results with minimal scarring and shorter recovery times compared to traditional surgical excision. Vascular laser treats vascular lesions such as cherry angiomas and spider angiomas, often with complete removal and without scarring. Advantages include minimal discomfort and no scarring. Sometimes a single treatment is successful, and sometimes multiple treatments are required. Learn more.

The Importance of Working with a Qualified Dermatologist

Before undergoing mole removal, individuals should undergo a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider to assess the characteristics of the moles, rule out any concerning features indicative of skin cancer, and determine the most appropriate course of action.

If no medical concerns are identified, individuals can explore cosmetic treatment options, expectations, and potential risks associated with mole removal procedures. This collaborative approach ensures that mole removal decisions are informed and aligned with individual preferences and healthcare needs.
