Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin condition that causes inflammation and a rapid buildup of skin cells, resulting in red, thick, and scaly patches known as plaques. If you're concerned about psoriasis, trust your skin to the experts at DERM Lab in North Vancouver.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis affects approximately 1-3% of Canadians. It manifests as plaques that can be itchy, painful, and sometimes even bleed. Although it often appears on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back, it can affect any body part. The severity of psoriasis varies, but in some cases, it can significantly compromise quality of life, causing pain and discomfort, lowering self-confidence, and triggering social anxiety.

Psoriasis Treatments

After an accurate diagnosis, a dermatologist can offer personalized treatment plans, which may include:

Treatment Options

These medications are applied directly to the skin and may include corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, retinoids, or calcineurin inhibitors. They help reduce inflammation, slow skin cell growth, and alleviate symptoms such as itching and scaling.

Phototherapy involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet light in a controlled environment in a physician’s office, from artificial light sources like narrow-band UVB (NBUVB). This treatment helps reduce inflammation, suppress the immune response, and improve psoriasis symptoms, particularly in cases of severe or widespread involvement. Please note, the bulbs used in tanning salons are UVA, which are more damaging to the skin and do not have the same dermatitis-relieving effect as UVB.

For more severe cases of psoriasis, oral medications such as methotrexate, cyclosporine, acitretin, oral small molecules such as apremilast or deucravacitinib, or injectable biologic therapies may be prescribed. These medications work internally to modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Dermatologists provide practical advice on skin care routines, lifestyle adjustments, and strategies to minimize flare-ups. This may include moisturizer recommendations, gentle skincare products, stress management techniques, and avoiding triggers such as certain medications or infections. Dermatologists can also counsel about comorbidities- other conditions such as psoriatic arthritis, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and mental health issues that can be more common in individuals with psoriasis.
